If you have been a victim of a criminal personal injury, you may be able to claim compensation from the CICA (Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority). You have up to two years from the date of the incident to apply. Cases are unlikely to be considered after that time unless there are exceptional circumstances.
The award is made at the discretion of the CICA and is based on a system in which there is a set amount of money for each injury claimed. CICA can refuse to make an award or reduce the amount in certain cases.
The CICA does not pay for the costs of a lawyer and you do not need to use one to make a claim for a criminal injury. However, the process and rules can be complicated and you may need legal advice. In addition, you must report the incident to the police soon after the incident and you must cooperate fully with their enquiries.
